Do You Really Need To Change?

I love resolutions.

I love the idea that I can set intentions and dictate the direction of my life and happiness. But when it comes to my body, I refuse to make resolutions anymore.

I’ve spent years trying to control, sculpt, starve, and tame my body. For decades, my body took the brunt of my desire for acceptance, my fear or rejection, and my belief that unless I had a perfect figure, I did not deserve love.

I used New Years resolutions as one more excuse to try to change myself. To not love myself exactly as I am, right now.

Not anymore. Instead of making a resolution to lose weight, to work out more, or even to listen more deeply to my body—I’m simply going to love and accept myself exactly as I am.

This New Years, what would it look like if you knew you were already perfect? What would happen if you didn’t try to change yourself? What if you didn’t make any new commitments except to love yourself no matter what, and embrace who you are right now, in this moment? Belly, thighs, arms, chin(s), hair, teeth, toes… all of you.

What would it look like to give up the fight, sit back, and let yourself be? What do you think would happen?

I was telling a client-friend the other day that I used to believe that if I didn’t keep tabs on my eating and make sure I worked out every day that I’d explode into obesity. Ha! Literally. I thought I would blow up.
